TMD & Bruxism

Treating jaw joint problems & teeth grinding

TMD (Temporomandibular Disorder) refers to a dysfunction of the jaw joint and surrounding musculature. In Germany, about 10-15% of the population suffers from jaw joint problems, often without noticing, as symptoms are diverse and non-specific.

What is TMD?

TMD can lead to jaw joint pain, headaches, teeth grinding and clenching as well as pain in the neck and shoulder area. Early treatment prevents long-term tooth damage and improves your quality of life.

Symptoms

How do I recognize TMD or bruxism?

The symptoms of TMD and teeth grinding are diverse and are often not immediately associated with the jaw joint.

Typical warning signs:

  • Frequent headaches or migraines
  • Jaw or tooth pain
  • Noises in the jaw joint (clicking, grinding)
  • Neck or shoulder tension
  • Tooth wear or tooth sensitivity

Early diagnosis important

Many people don't even notice that they grind or suffer from TMD. A professional functional analysis helps to recognize and treat complaints early.

Causes

What triggers TMD and bruxism?

The causes of jaw joint problems and teeth grinding are diverse and often interconnected.

Stress

Leads to unconscious teeth grinding and tension of the jaw musculature

Overload

Unfavorable bite position or misalignment of teeth leads to overload of the jaw joint

Injuries

Accidents or misalignments of the jaw can cause TMD

Other factors

Tooth misalignments, bruxism, sleep disorders affect jaw joint and musculature

Many don't notice it

Many people may not even notice that they grind or suffer from TMD. The symptoms are very diverse and partly non-specific, so a professional functional analysis is important.

Consequences

What happens when you grind your teeth a lot?

Teeth grinding (bruxism) can lead to considerable damage over time. Early treatment is important.

Tooth damage

High

Teeth can be severely worn down by grinding, leading to pain and long-term damage.

Jaw joint problems

High

Chronic grinding stresses the jaw joint and can lead to serious dysfunction (TMD).

Headaches & Migraines

Medium

Untreated grinding can cause severe headaches and migraines that are not always associated with teeth.

Treatment

How can we help?

Various treatment options help to relieve complaints and protect your teeth.

1

Grinding splints (occlusal splints)

These splints protect your teeth from wear and help relax the musculature. They are individually adjusted and provide relief for the jaw joint, the most important treatment measure for TMD and bruxism.

2

Physiotherapy

In many cases we recommend physiotherapy to relieve tension and relax the musculature. Specialized jaw joint therapies can also be helpful and support the effect of the splint.

3

Bite corrections

For misalignments or bite problems, dental splints, dental corrections or other dental measures can help reduce overload. Particularly important is gap care with bridges or implants.

4

Functional analysis

A professional functional analysis helps identify the exact causes of your complaints and plan optimal therapy. This allows us to help specifically and sustainably.

Individually adjusted splints

Each grinding splint is precisely adjusted to your tooth structure for optimal protection and maximum comfort. The splint prevents tooth damage and relieves the jaw joint.

Long-term protection

With the right treatment, we can prevent tooth damage and relieve jaw joint problems, for more quality of life and a healthy smile.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about TMD & Bruxism

What is TMD (Temporomandibular Disorder)?
TMD describes dysfunctions of the jaw joint and masticatory musculature. They manifest through pain, clicking, restricted mouth opening or tension extending to neck and shoulders.
How many people in Germany are affected?
According to estimates, around 10 to 15 percent of the population suffer from jaw joint problems. Many don't notice it because symptoms are often non-specific.
What are the causes of TMD?
Common triggers are stress and associated teeth grinding, bite contacts, tooth loss, poorly fitting fillings or jaw injuries. Sleep disorders can also stress the joint.
What happens when I grind my teeth a lot?
Teeth wear down, tooth necks become sensitive and the jaw joint becomes inflamed. Consequences can be headaches, migraines and tension in the neck.
How can we help?
We make individual occlusal splints, work with specialized physiotherapists and correct bite contacts e.g. with aligner therapy, dental prosthetics or bite elevation. If needed, we involve other specialties.
What are the disadvantages of grinding and how dangerous is it?
Untreated bruxism leads to tooth damage, cracks, jaw joint problems and can cause severe pain or tinnitus long-term. Early therapy prevents consequential damage.
How do I recognize if I grind or have TMD?
Indications are head or facial pain, jaw clicking, tense neck musculature, sensitive teeth or visible wear. Have yourself examined if you have such symptoms.
